ODM Leaders Meet Elders Today
ODM’s Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi are this afternoon due lead two teams of elders from Nyanza and Western provinces for a meeting with Kalenjin elders led by William Ruto.
Today’s meeting in Eldoret is a culmination of a series of meetings that were held between elders from Western and Nyanza provinces in Kisumu two weeks ago where Raila and Mudavadi were mandated to look towards ‘working together to resolve economic and political issues facing the people of Western and Nyanza Provinces’.
Following ODM’s defection from Kalonzo Musyoka ODM-K, it seems like the leaders have suddenly realised that their strength lies in their unity. It is therefore expected that a major announcement will emerge after today’s meeting to lay foundation towards establishing what political observers are calling a Western Kenya alliance. The ODM leaders have denied that the meeting has been called to agree to reach consensus in identifying one of them to be ODM presidential candidate. They maintain that this is a brainstorming session aimed at unifying the three communities.
The Orange Democratic Movement party plans to hold a delegates congress in Kasarani Gymnasium on Saturday 1st September 2007 to pick its presidential candidate and today’s meeting in Eldoret might have the elders endorsing one of the luminaries.
Meanwhile in Nairobi, Narc-Kenya has this morning been conducting a series of road-shows all over city estates, in support of President Mwai Kibaki as the party celebrates its first anniversary. The party expects to hold a major public rally at the historic Kamkunji grounds this afternoon and the road-show trucks have this morning been seen picking up supporters around various estates donning green NARC-Kenya t-shirts. As we went to press, thousands of people had already gathered at Kamkunji grounds including Ministers Saitoti, Tuju, Kamanda, Mwenje had already arrived at the venue.
